Abstract

The purpose of this study was, firstly, to investigate and compare the role perception and the actual role performance of the psychiatric mental health nurses. Secondly, it has been aimed to investigate the role perception and role performance of the psychiatric mental health nurses perceived by the general nurses who work with them in the same hospitals.
The subjects of the study were narrowed down to the members of the Korean Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse between 1st of June ¢¥96 to 28th. There were 85 of the psychiatric mental health nurses and 52 of the general nurses from 9 psychiatry of the university or general hospitals, 5 mental hospitals, 36 public health centers and 2 social welfare organs.
The questionaries for the role of the psychiatric mental health nurses were based on the one that Yang(1999) has made. The analysis of the data has been examined through arithmetic mean, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson t-test and Pearson Correlation Coefficient with the help of SPSS/PC.
The results of the study are as follows:
1) In case of the role perception, the average score of the psychiatric mental health nurses themselves was 4.63 and that of. The general nurses was 4.55. Although the perception of the former were higher than the latter, such difference has no significance statistically. For both of the psychiatric mental health nurses and the general nurses, the highest score for the role perception was marked in the fields of curers and primary nursing practitioners. The fields of the counsellors and problem-solvers have had the lowest score.
2) In case of the role performance, the self-judged ¢¥average score of the psychiatric mental health nurses was 3.44. The role performance of the psychiatric mental health nui¡×es observed by the general nurses has had the average score of 3.29. Although there were again some difference between the psychiatric mental health nurses and the general nurses, it was not enough to imply any significance statistically. For both of the psychiatric mental health nurses and the general nurses, the highest score for the role performance was marked in the fields of therapists team collaborators and primary nursing practitioners. The lowest was shown in the fields of counsellors, problem-solvers and case managers.
3) The role perception of the psychiatric mental health nurses showed significant difference(p= .035) according to their status and the place they worked. The nurses of the higher rank have had better role perception than those of the lower rank. And the nurses working in the public health centers of the community have had better role perception than those who worked in the hospitals.
4) The role performance self-judged by the psychiatric mental health nurses showed significant difference(p= .000) according to their status and the place they worked. The nurses working in the public health centers of the community had the best score in the role performance.
5) The role perception of the psychiatric mental health nurses, their self-judged score of their role performance and their actual performance displayed significant difference (p= .000).
6) There has been pure correlation (p= .3512) between the role perception of the psychiatric mental health nurses and their actual performance.
